Bellvue Mill Industrial Tank, Hillsborough NC
http://images.sodahead.com/profiles/0/0/0/5/1/6/6/3/9/Bellvue-Mill-Industrial-Tank-31537114211.jpeg
Industrial tank at a closed textile mill, on the west side of Hillsborough. Unlike municipal tanks which supply drinking water, the primary purpose for this tank was fire protection. If electricity, or the town's water system, failed for any reason, several hundred thousand gallons of gravity-fed water in the elevated tank could operate the emergency sprinkler system. The mill dates from around 1900, and was also known as Flynt Fabrics. This tank replaced a 122,000-gallon standpipe which was fed from the river.

Municipal Tank, Ramseur, NC
http://images.sodahead.com/profiles/0/0/0/5/1/6/6/3/9/Ramsuer-Municipal-Tank-31536966267.jpeg
Municipal tank, along Highway US-64. This tank sits on a slight rise, on the south side of the main highway through Ramseur. The town's name is painted on the west side.

Located at Cole Park Plaza Shopping Center between Chapel Hill and Pittsboro, NC. I'm guessing that the tower was already here from some other facility that used to be on this site and the shopping center kept it for advertising.

Municipal Standpipe, Hillsborough NC
http://images.sodahead.com/profiles/0/0/0/5/1/6/6/3/9/Municipal-Standpipe-Hillsborough-31569914603.jpeg
A 200,000-gallon standpipe on a hill overlooking Hillsborough. Standpipes are an old but reliable hydro technology. They have smaller "footprints" than a water tank. (Actually, a water tank is a short standpipe atop a metal tower.)
